Post Welfare State | Garden of the Utopian dream

72 hr competition
Aarhus festival week, Denmark
2020

The project aims at reflecting on the city’s efforts in dealing with the issue of social housing, with the focus on the potentials of the solution that are existing today.

As the city gears up for an even bigger population boom, some of the underlying challenges that faces the city today need to be addressed, for example:

-lack of affordable housing,

-social and economical accommodations for immigrants and students,'

-the accessibility of the public facilities and

-the ownership of the public realm.

The project acts a platform facilitating the much needed dialogue between the residents and the municipality. The project is played out in two parts:

01) Garden of the Utopian Dream: A garden for reflection where five tall mirrored sculptures are placed in a row on grassy field. The scuptures are abstractions of the tall buld- ings blocks of the social projects, with the mirrors providing a poetic space in between. The city is reflected, as are the visitors, a strong reminder that we are indeed in it together.

02) The Park: A smaller green forest is placed to the south- ern end of the site, setting a stage for the garden. The young treees used are reflected on the sculptures, further heightening the monumentality of the sculptures.
